Select crossing involving only two (out of many) plants with the best spination, from one of the finest spined E. horizonthalonius ecotypes in Cuba, DUR. Short, thick, apressed, ribbed spines, black to orange brown, very thick down-curving central. Hemispherical bluish body. Impressive!

E. horizonthalonius seeds intrinsically have low germination rates and therefore some treatment is required to increase it. Apart from presoaking in water for 24 hrs (which may help and does no harm), we cannot recommend any of the specific treatments cited in the literature, as the results vary widely for different growers. Experimentation is required.
